tests: avoid infinite recursion for `make check`
The combination of a misspelled directory name and failing to check the
result of cd leads to infinite recursion as `make check` simply invokes
itself over and over.

Follow-up to 00887aee8ca0efe0b40fa41b2a36e2d853d49b57 #18079
